In My Garden

I've been dreaming about spring all week and found myself wanting to paint something just for me!!!  I am currently reading the book "Taking Flight" by Kelly Rae and it's one of the best books on collage I have ever read.  It's full of wonderful techniques and soul searching thoughts.  This piece was inspired by one of the pieces in her book.

65th Birthday Materpiece

The past Saturday was filled with some very special family moments.  My mom and father-in-law were born on the exact same day and both turned 65 this year. We celebrated with a surprise party for them.  It was a wonderful turnout with lots of food, decorations, friends, family and even some surprise guest from afar.  My sister, her daughter and son-in-law made this whimsical birthday cake; can you believe it took them two days to complete?  This cake was not only beautiful but tasted amazing too.  Thank you, Kerry, Chelsea and Erik for your hardwork.  I know the birthday boy and girl both loooooved it!

Dance

Title: Dance   Size: 8x10 Medium:  Mixed Media Collage

Lately I've been thinking more and more about how I got here and where I'm going. I have these dreams for the future of living my authentic life, being creative and sharing what's inside my heart without fearing the rejection of others.  I think about my dreams and the fears stopping me from fully stepping into them and making them real.  One barrier that has surfaced repeatedly throughout the years has been the fear of stepping on the toes of others.  I am coming to realize, if I want to dance my dance, I need to break through these barrier and leap fearlessly towards the dance of my life.

This painting was one of the pieces I created while working through "Taking Flight".  I've learned so much about mixed media collage through Kelly's book.  I'm still on my journey in finding my own unique style.  I have a vision of what that is and i'm moving closer and closer to it day by day.

Valentine Mixed Media Collage

I got a little carried away this valentine’s day and I am sure that a few of you will find this blog post a little sappy but sometimes life is sappy. It all started one evening while reading through a box of old letters I have received throughout the years.  I read them on occasion when I want to take a walk down memory lane, there is nothing like unfolding an old letter and letting our minds drift back to that time in our lives.  My daughter walked in and was amazed at the box full of letters; she asked why I had so many. I told her things were very different back then as we did not have MSN, Twitter and Skype to keep in touch.  I am so grateful that I have the love letters my husband and I wrote to each other as a reminder of the young couple we once were. Experiencing these memories and feelings while reading our letters inspired me to do this piece.

Pretty Mixed Media Collage Art (SOLD)

These are three fun pieces I completed this past weekend!   My family was away and I wanted to play with my paints:)  I'm hoping to get a few more like these done by April as I'll be offering a Mixed Media Collage Workshop at the Naked North Gallery and Gifts.   At this workshop I will be bringing together a variety of mixed media and papercrafting techniques including collage, rubber stamping, and embellishing. The creative possibilities are endless! At the end of the workshop each participant will have a completed 8x10 piece of art to take home with them.  Beginner and advanced crafters are welcome. I'm hoping this class will inspire my students to create their own multi-dimensional art that is reflective of thier moods, thoughts and life.

Life Lessons Mandala Mixed Media Piece

I've always been intrigued by mandalas and lifes lessons.  Life is too short to constantly worry about what others think of me or my actions. I spent most of my past worried about what others thought of me and trying to meet their approval. Whatever was considered "socially acceptable" at that moment was what I strived for. Obviously,  I had quite a balancing act trying to keep up with the ever-changing definitions of acceptable behavior.  Even now I find myself sometimes falling back into these old ways but for the most part I no longer live my life dictated by the whims of others.

One more thing I've learned is not to take life so damn seriously... like everything else it will come to an end and what happens next will be nothing less than miraculous!

SoulCollage Card "Elephant in the Corner"

I made this collage a few days ago eventhough in my heart I knew what my soul was trying to say, I just couldn't put it into words.  When I came across this definition today I was so happy to finally find a way to  put feelings into words...  "elephant in the corner" is an English idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem no one wants to discuss.

This collage is based on the idea that an elephant in our surroundings is impossible to overlook; thus, myself and others who pretend the elephant is not there may be concerning ourselves with relatively small and even irrelevant matters, compared to the looming big one.

I've come across this feeling at different points in my life and it's at these time I catch myself thinking "if I pretend it's not there will it go away"?  It never does! When looking at this card I hope to be reminded that facing the uncomfortable situations in my life will set me free, allowing me to be ME and living life in it's truest form.

OneArtsyChick Collar Necklace

These bold necklaces are all over the fashion magazines and are popping up everywhere from the runway to the red carpet. Bib or collared necklaces are being used to dress up everything from basic skinny tank tops to strapless cocktail dresses. They can make old outfits look new again and heads turn when you step into a room. I made this piece for my girlfriend Michelle for her birthday. Each flower was hand stitched and a hint of sparkle was added by sewing on beads. Black silky ribbon was used to fasten into a pretty bow on the back of her neck.

Oliver's Big Adventure

A very nice person and her husband whom I've known for many years give their son one piece of artwork made by a local artists each year.  I was honoured when they chose me to do this piece for him.  She asked that I incorporate him and his two dogs into a magical painting full of life and of colour.

My First SoulCollage Card

Here is my very first SoulCollage card for 2010.  I made it by flipping through magazines and cutting out only the pictures that spoke to me at the time and next organizing them in such a way on my board that was appealing to me.  I then did some drawing and art work to add more of my thoughts without adding words. This is the first step in creating my very own personal deck of cards, which I will be able to use throughout my life.  If you know me well you'll know I own my own set of tarot cards, I have always been interested in making the connection from minds to soul and lettling the cards speak to the future.  If you want to know more about SoulCollage please visit http://www.soulcollage.com/

Mod Podge Button Sign

I've wanted to do this for so long and I finally had the chance this weekend.  I've taken a plain picture frame, painted it black and mod podged some vintage buttons to form the letter "N" for NOTTE.  I had so much fun doing this piece.  But beware it's not as easy as it looks!

I made this soft, hand-tied scarf with multipal shades & textures throughout. I've attached a few buttons here and there to add some interest. It is a fun and lovely homage to the outdoors at about 5 feet long. This scarf is gorgeous without being suffocating and is the perfect length to dangle down to the waist like a rock star or bundle around the neck to really set off facial features.

These scarves make perfect gifts for those special ladies in your life!  If you're interested in placing an order please email me and I'll have it ready for you within two days:)
